France to hold new economic-crisis summit in January

Nov 18, 2008, 11:33 GMT

Paris - France is planning to hold another international summit on the economic crisis in January, the office of President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Tuesday.

Sarkozy and former British prime minister Tony Blair will co-host the summit, which will be held on January 8 and 9 in Paris.

Those who have already agreed to participate include Nobel Prize- winning economists Josef Stiglitz and Amartya Sen as well as US philosopher Francis Fukuyama.

'Senior international political figures' will also take part, Sarkozy's office said in a press statement.

Sarkozy said that the aim of the summit would be to 'demonstrate that we can propose concrete proposals to the challenges we face.'

The French president came away from last weekend's G20 summit in Washington with fewer concrete commitments than he had originally envisaged.

In addition, after spending six months as acting president of the European Union, he will be reluctant to leave the world stage. The new summit enables Sarkozy to remain at the forefront of the efforts to deal with the crisis.
