Dec 17, 2008, 9:09 GMT
London - Unemployment in Britain rose sharply to 1.86 million in the quarter to the end of October, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) said Wednesday.
In November, the number of people claiming unemployment benefit soared by 75,700 - the biggest monthly increase since the spring of 1991, the figures showed.
Unemployment levels are widely expected to go over 2 million by the end of the year, with the construction and financial services sectors most acutely hit.
