Massive gas supply cut to Austria affects other countries (Extra)

Vienna - A 90-per-cent decrease of Russian natural gas supplies to Austria means that a number of Western and Central European countries will also be affected, as Austria's oil and gas provider OMV AG transports gas to these countries, the company said Tuesday. Spokeswoman Michaela Huber confirmed that Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, Germany and France would receive only 10 per cent of the volumes usually supplied by OMV, after Russia on Tuesday cut its deliveries to Europe via the Ukraine by two-thirds. But Huber noted that OMV was not the only supplier to these countries. 'This underscores the importance for alternative supply routes like the Nabucco line,' said Huber. She was referring to a planned pipeline project that would transport natural gas from the Caspian Sea to Europe, bypassing Russia. Huber did not say how long OMV could draw from its stocks to provide gas to Austrian customers. 'Our stocks of 1.7 billion cubic metres are sufficient for the time being,' she said.
