Faith leaders in Britain call on G20 not to "forget the poor"

London - Britain's religious leaders Monday urged the heads of the Group of 20 (G20) nations 'not to forget the poor' during their one-day summit meeting in London Thursday.
In a joint statement they said to ignore the needs of the poor would 'be to compound regrettable past failures with needless future injustices.'
While acknowledging the 'sheer complexity' of the challenge facing politicians over the global crisis, the statement called on leaders to 'restore that lost sense of balance between the requirements of market mechanisms that help deliver increased prosperity, and the moral requirement to safeguard human dignity, regardless of economic or social category.'
Among the 32 signatories were the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, the (Roman Catholic) Archbishop of Westminster, Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, the Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain, Mohammed Abdul Bari, the chairman of the Christian-Muslim Forum, Musharraf Hussain Azhari, the General Secretary of the Hindu Council UK, Anil Bhanot, and the Primate of the Armenian Orthodox Church of Great Britain, Bishop Nathan Hovhannisian.
