British Telecom in further large-scale job cuts
May 14, 2009, 6:52 GMT
London - Telecommunications giant British Telecom (BT) said Thursday that it would cut up to 15,000 jobs in the coming year, representing 10 per cent of its workforce.
The company also revealed in London that the same number of posts had been cut over the last 12 months - some 500 more than expected.
BT said it was aiming to cut the jobs through natural wastage, non-replacement and voluntary redundancy and had no plans for compulsory lay-offs.
Its workforce fell from 162,000 to 147,000 in the year to March, BT said.
BT also announced that it was considering bringing back some work which has been outsourced to countries like India in recent years.
The company said a drop in demand for global services and a rising pensions deficit were among factors behind the job reduction.
