Job market wilts in Australia
Jun 11, 2009, 5:00 GMT
Sydney - There was evidence of glum economic times in Thursday's official figures showing unemployment in Australia rising to 5.7 per cent in May from 5.5 per cent in April.
Full-time positions fell by 26,200 - losses that were almost cancelled out by a rise of 24,500 in the number of extra part-time jobs.
Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show 655,000 out of work.
The figures also show 13.4 per cent are working fewer hours than they would like - probably because employers are offering fewer hours to their part-timers.
'The global recession is hitting the Australian economy and Australian jobs,' Employment Minister Julia Gillard said. 'We've always said we were not immune from the global recession.'
