BA workers asked to give up salary to help airline's finances

London - British Airways (BA) has asked tens of thousands of staff to work without pay for up to a month this summer in order to improve the airline's finances, it was reported Tuesday. An e-mail appeal sent to 30,000 workers in Britain asks them to volunteer for between one week and one month's unpaid leave, or unpaid work, in July. BA's chief executive Willie Walsh has already agreed to work unpaid in July, forgoing his monthly salary of 61,000 pounds (100,000 dollars). Last month, BA posted a record annual loss of 401 million pounds for 2008, due largely partly to higher fuel bills. 'I am looking for every single part of the company to take part in some way in this cash-effective way of helping the company's survival plan,' he said. 'It really counts,' he added. There was no immediate feedback to the response to the plan.
