Boeing again delays flight of 787 Dreamliner
Jun 23, 2009, 21:56 GMT
Washington - US aerospace giant Boeing on Tuesday delayed the first flight of its highly anticipated 787 Dreamliner, which is already two years behind schedule.
The flight had been set for the end of June after four previous delays. Boeing did not offer a new date, and the announcement sent the company's share price plummeting more than 6 per cent.
Project head Scott Fancher said that tests last week revealed problems with the joint between the body and the wing. Boeing would come up with a new timetable in the coming weeks, according to Scott Carson, head of Boeing's commercial division.
Boeing already has 866 orders from around the world for the Dreamliner, which makes the long-range jet its most ordered model in the company's nearly 100-year history. Analysts said the new delay could prompt some airlines to cancel their orders.
Boeing had hoped to start delivering the jetliner in the first quarter of next year. Carson acknowledged the new delay could have an impact on its delivery schedule.
The news could open the door for European arch-rival Airbus, which is hoping to complete production of its A350 model to compete with the Dreamliner by 2013.

Terrific...just what they need! Honestly, and to think we used to do it with slide rules, pencils and calipers...
