European Union slaps billion-euro fine on gas companies

Jul 8, 2009, 9:16 GMT

Brussels (dpa) - The European Commission slapped more than 1 billion euros in fines on two giant gas companies Tuesday, saying they had been fixing the market.

E.ON of Germany and GDF Suez of France much each pay 553 million euros (770 million dollars) each. The EU executive body in Brussels said it was the first fine it had ever imposed in the energy sector.

The two companies built a pipeline in 1975 and prevented anyone else using it until 2005, the EU said.

E.ON needs to be fined in the US as well - they bought and own Kentucky, and what they have done to the environment there is a crime with their antiquated coal firing plants that are exempt from EPA standards that have been slowly killing and sickening Kentucky residents for decades.

Residual effects from Kentucky's polluted water and air have rebounded through the nation, and the local Government is clueless as to the damage they have done. Other groups such as the Sierra Club have attempted to intercept, however to date the results of those efforts have been minimal thanks to E.ON's power and persuasion. It is sad to see so many people sick and dying as a result of E.ON's greed.

When is the US going to catch on?
