Fall in tourist arrivals eases off in Singapore
Aug 25, 2009, 10:21 GMT
Singapore - Singapore's ailing tourism industry has seen slight signs of recovery as visitor arrivals fell 4.5 per cent in July compared to a year earlier, marking the smallest decline so far in 2009, data released on Tuesday showed.
In July, 881,000 tourists arrived in the city-state, down from 923,000 in the same month 2008, the Singapore Tourism Board said in a statement.
Visitor days were estimated at 4.6 million days, a fall by 11.6 per cent from a year ago.
The average occupancy rate in Singapore's hotels reached 80 per cent in July, a drop by 4.5 percentage points from a year ago, the board said.
Hotel room revenue reached 127 million Singapore dollars (88 million US dollars) in July, a slump by 29.7 per cent year-on-year.
The numbers were better than figures for the first half of 2009, when visitor arrivals dropped 11.5 per cent and room revenue slumped 33.2 per cent year-on-year.
The board attributed the improvement mainly to attractive summer promotions which led to double-digit growth in visitor arrivals from Hong Kong, Malaysia and Vietnam.
