Manila - The Philippines unemployment rate inched up to 7.6 per cent in July as the country struggled with the effects of the global economic crisis, the government said Tuesday.
The number of unemployed workers rose to 2.9 million people from the 2.7 million recorded in the same month last year, the National Statistics Office said.
The rate compared with the 7.4 per cent reported in July 2008.
The agency put the number of people with jobs two months ago at 35.5 million as the country's labour force inched up to 38.4 million from 37.3 million a year ago.
The number of underemployed workers - those who want additional work hours and those working fewer than 40 hours per week - was estimated at 7 million, placing the underemployment rate at 19.8 per cent.
