Taiwan to hold seminar to woo Chinese investors

Taipei - Taiwan plans to hold a seminar after the next round of high-level talks with China in December in a bid to woo Chinese investors, a senior official said Tuesday. 'The two sides will jointly hold a seminar and invite mainland businessmen interested in investing in Taiwan to take part in the event,' said Maa Shaw-chang, deputy secretary-general of the Straits Exchange Foundation, a semi-official body that deals with China in the absence of formal ties. Maa said the Taiwanese hosts would brief investors on the island's regulations governing Chinese investments and introduce them to the investment climate and opportunities. The seminar will be held right after the 4th Cross-Strait Forum to be held in the central city of Taichung in the second half of December, Maa said. Since June last year, the two sides have held three rounds of high-level talks and signed nine agreements covering direct flights, shipping, travel, postal exchanges and joint efforts to fight crime. Taiwan and China had been at loggerheads since they split at the end of a civil war in 1949. President Ma Ying-jeou vowed to improve ties after he was elected to office in May last year.
