T-Mobile customers' details sold to rivals, company admits
Nov 17, 2009, 17:00 GMT
London - The private details of thousands of T-mobile customers in Britain were sold to rival firms, a spokesman for the company confirmed Tuesday.
The British subsidiary of the German mobile company alerted Britain's data protection watchdog after it discovered contract information was being passed on 'without our knowledge,' the spokesman said.
A spokesman added that the situation was 'deeply regrettable' and suggested it was an industry-wide problem.
The country's Information Commissioner, who is investigating the breach of data protection rules, said thousands of mobile phone owners had their details sold on for 'substantial sums.'
According to the T-Mobile spokesman, the company had been asked to keep the problem a secret to avoid prejudicing a criminal prosecution.
