Thousands of Spanish farmers protest for higher prices
Nov 21, 2009, 13:52 GMT
Madrid - Tens of thousands of farmers demonstrated in the Spanish capital of Madrid on Saturday for higher prices for their produce, claiming that farming in the country was no longer profitable.
According to the state broadcaster RNE, more than 100,000 people from around the country took part in the protest, the largest demonstration by Spanish farmers in decades.
The demonstration under the slogan 'For Fair Prices' was called by the country's largest farmers federations and more than 3,000 cooperatives.
The organizers stated that the European Union's agriculture policies were leading Spanish farmers into ruin. Farmers' expenses for equipment, fertilizer and seeds had risen greatly, while prices for milk, grains, citrus fruits and wine grapes had fallen.
As part of a protest action on Friday, thousands of farmers went on strike, gathering in village squares and blocking highways with their tractors.
