British drivers on Eurostar trains to go on strike at weekend
Dec 16, 2009, 18:50 GMT
London - Some 70 British drivers of Eurostar trains to France and Belgium will go on strike this weekend in a move set to cause major disruption for pre-Christmas travellers.
Aslef, Britain's train drivers' union, announced the industrial action after last-ditch talks with Eurostar over pay collapsed in London.
About 70 drivers and 20 on-board staff would walk out on Friday and Saturday and further strikes could follow, the union said.
Eurostar services are operated by staff from Britain, France and Belgium.
Aslef has said that French and Belgian drivers receive an 'international allowance' of 1,000 pounds (1,638 dollars), something not granted to British drivers.
