Budapest transport strike ends after six days
Jan 18, 2010, 0:26 GMT
Budapest - Employees of Budapest's transport authority (BKV) plan to end a six-day strike after Sunday midnight, according to an agreement Sunday evening between the unions and the BKV management over conditions of a new collective contract.
Unions representing almost half of the 12,000 employees of Budapest's municipal public transport company BKV began industrial action before dawn on Tuesday, calling for better pay and conditions.
The strike was not uniformly followed. Metro and rapid transit trains were running, while street cars and busses were closed down. The result was traffic chaos during rush hour on Budapests' streets.
The heavily-indebted firm maintains that a new collective agreement it has proposed would increase the take home pay of most employees by 13 per cent.
