Strike over job cuts disrupts French railway traffic
Feb 3, 2010, 8:14 GMT
Paris - A 36-hour strike by French railway workers has disrupted rail traffic throughout the country, the national rail network SNCF said Wednesday.
Around one in three scheduled high-speed TGV trains were not operating Wednesday, while some two thirds of regional and suburban trains were not running, the SNCF said.
However, international trains, such as the Eurostar linking Paris and London, were not affected by the strike.
The job action was called by four trade unions to protest a planned SNCF restructuring that they say will lead to the loss of more than 3,700 jobs.
The job action is to end early Thursday. But union leaders have said they would call for an unlimited strike if no offer is forthcoming from the SNCF.
