Taiwan hopes to attract 1 million Chinese tourists in 2010
Feb 18, 2010, 6:46 GMT
Taipei - Taiwan said Thursday that it hopes to attract 1 million Chinese tourists in 2010.
The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) said the opening of Taiwan-China tourism links in 2008 has helped promote cross-Strait ties and boost Taiwan's tourism industry.
Taiwan announced it will take more measures to lure Chinese tourists and hopes China would allow more mainland tourists to visit Taiwan.
Under a 2008 agreement, China agreed to send an average of 3,000 tourists to Taiwan daily, but has not fulfilled that quota yet, the MAC said.
If 3,000 Chinese per day come to Taiwan, the island can reach its 1-million target in 2010.
Taiwan, after being split from China for six decades, opened its door to Chinese tourists on July 4, 2008.
Last year, 646,783 Chinese tourists visited Taiwan, bringing the island 1.13 billion US dollars in tourism revenues.
During the February 13-21 Chinese New Year holidays, 1,500 Chinese tour groups, totaling 40,000 tourists, are scheduled to enter Taiwan.
