Taichung to invite foreign firms to design 300-metre tower
Feb 20, 2010, 4:34 GMT
Taipei - Taiwan's central city of Taichung plans to launch international bids for construction of a 300-metre tower overlooking the Taiwan Strait, an official said Saturday.
Deputy Mayor Hsiao Chia-chi said tenders for the concept design of the Taiwan Tower would be called in April or May, with bids for the the final design coming early next year.
'The tower will be at least 300 metres. It will have an observation deck, a restaurant and office space. Construction will begin in 2012, and the tower should be built in two years,' he said by phone.
'Like the Eifel Tower, Tokyo Tower or the Seattle Tower (Space Needle), we hope this tower will become the landmark of Taichung. From its observation deck, tourists can see the Taiwan Strait, the Jade Mountain and the night view of Taichung,' he said.
The project would include a park, an exhibition centre, a university and a commercial complex.
