(eca008): Japanese stocks fall in morning trading
Mar 10, 2010, 2:52 GMT
Tokyo - Stocks in Tokyo declined in Wednesday morning trading as investors were cautious ahead of announcements of key economic data in China and the United States.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average lost 8.6 points, or 0.08 per cent, to trade at 10,559.05 while the broader Topix index edged down 1.62 points, or 0.18 per cent, to 922.76.
China's consumer price index for February was due to be released Thursday, and the US retail sales data for February was set for release Friday.
Meanwhile, the nation's core private-sector machinery orders slipped a seasonally adjusted 3.7 per cent in January from December to 723.8 billion yen (8.05 billion dollars), the Cabinet Office said Wednesday.
The decline, however, could be seen as a reaction to the surge in December when orders soared 20.1 per cent, the office said.
On currency markets at 9 am (0000 GMT), the dollar traded at 90.01-02 yen, up slightly from Tuesday's 5 pm quote of 89.93-96 yen.
The euro traded at 1.3603-3609 dollars, down slightly from 1.3618-3621 dollars Tuesday, and at 122.46-122.50 yen, little changed from 122.49-53 yen.
