London - Irish national carrier Aer Lingus has sunk deeper into the red over the last year, despite a slight increase in passenger numbers, according to results released Tuesday.
The company reported a full year loss of 130 million pounds (195 million dollars), nearly a fifth more than the previous year.
'2009 was a very difficult year for the group with total revenues declining by 11 per cent in the face of recession in each of our major markets,' said chief executive Christoph Mueller.
Preliminary figures showed earnings was 156 million pounds less amid higher operating costs. Ancillary revenue, on the other hand, grew by 16 per cent to 173.9 million pounds.
Aer Lingus carried around 10.4 million passengers, around 4 per cent more than the previous year.
The airline is seeking primarily to lower personnel costs to save money. Last year 670 jobs were cut.
