BRIC summit cut short; Hu to return to China due to earthquake
Apr 15, 2010, 16:25 GMT
Brasilia - A summit of the so-called BRIC emerging economies was to be cut short after Chinese President Hu Jintao was to return home due to the earthquake that struck western China, officials confirmed Thursday.
The BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) summit had originally been scheduled for Friday, but was to take place late Thursday in Brasilia.
According to the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, the change was to accommodate adjustments in Hu's agenda. Hu was to meet with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as planned, to sign a strategic association agreement for 2010-14.
Brazil said it 'appreciates' Hu's decision 'to maintain the substantial parts of the bilateral state visit and his participation in the second BRIC summit' even after the earthquake in which at least 600 people died.
Hu was earlier scheduled to travel to Venezuela and Chile after the summit.
China became Brazil's largest trading partner last year, ahead of the United States. In 2009, bilateral trade between the two countries totalled 36.1 million dollars, of which 20 billion were Brazilian exports.
