Singapore - Tourist arrivals in Singapore climbed 17.3 per cent year-on-year in March to reach 928,000, rising for the fourth consecutive month as the improving economic climate was bringing visitors back, the Singapore Tourism Board said Tuesday.
The number was the highest ever reported for the month of March, the board said in statement.
The average occupancy rate in Singapore's hotels grew 14 percentage points year-on-year to reach 87.1 per cent in March while the average room rate rose 3.3 per cent to an estimated 205 Singapore dollars (146 US dollars).
Hotel room revenue in March reached a total of 163 million Singapore dollars, up 23.1 per cent from a year ago, the board said.
Singapore earlier set high goals for the tourism sector in 2010 with hopes riding on two new multibillion-dollar casino resorts, Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa, designed to attract visitors from across Asia.
Visitor arrivals for this year were forecast to reach 11.5 million to 12.5 million, up 19 to 29 per cent from a year earlier.
Tourism revenues were expected to jump 41 to 49 per cent compared with last year, reaching 17.5 billion to 18.5 billion Singapore dollars, the board said.
