Jun 15, 2010, 8:06 GMT
Manila - The Philippines' unemployment rate rose to 8 per cent in April despite an impressive first-quarter economic growth of 7.3 per cent, the government said Tuesday.
The National Statistics Office said the April jobless rate was higher than the 7.5 per cent in the same month last year. January's unemployment rate was 7.3 per cent.
The agency, which conducts a quarterly labour survey, said the actual number of jobless people in the Philippines in April increased to 3 million from 2.8 million a year ago.
Employment rate dipped to 92 per cent in April from 92.5 per cent last year.
The rise in unemployment came at a time when the government of outgoing President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo boasted 7.3-per-cent economic growth for the first three months of 2010.
