Thousands of tourists stranded by Greek truck driver strike (Extra)
Jul 29, 2010, 15:51 GMT
Belgrade/Sofia - Thousands of foreigners who drove to Greece for their holidays have been stranded as petrol stations dried up during a strike by Greek truck drivers this week, Serbian and Bulgarian media reported Thursday.
'At least 100,000 Serbs are stuck in Greece,' the daily Press said. Most were stuck in traditionally popular Serb destinations in the northern Aegean - the Halkidiki peninsula and the island Thassos.
The Serbian consul in Thessaloniki, Jovica Cekic, advised travellers to 'fill up' at the last petrol station in Macedonia - 150 to 250 kilometres from the most popular Greek destinations.
Press quoted Serb tourists as saying that fuel was available on the black market for up to five euros for a litre of unleaded, around three times higher than the normal price.
Tourists from Bulgaria, Greece's northern neighbour, reported similar problems, the novinite.com new site said.
