Japanese shares climb on US employment reports
Sep 6, 2010, 3:15 GMT
Tokyo - Japanese stocks rose in Monday morning trading following gains on Wall Street as better-than-expected employment data in the United States helped boost investor sentiment.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average gained 138.49 points, or 1.52 per cent, to trade at 9,252.62 while the broader Topix index was up 10.21 points, or 1.24 per cent, at 833.91.
Some exporters climbed as the dollar strengthened against the yen. A weaker yen makes Japanese exports more competitive and improves overseas profits when the revenues are repatriated.
On currency markets at 9 am (0000 GMT), the dollar traded at 84.41-51 yen, up from Friday's 5 pm quote of 84.29-30.
The euro traded at 1.2887-2888 dollars, up from 1.2830-2832 dollars Friday, and at 108.81-88 yen, up from 108.15-19 yen.
