Taipei - Taiwan on Tuesday concluded an investment procurement forum with 27 companies pledging to invest or expand investment on the island to the tune of 3.4 billion US dollars.
Economics Minister Shih Yen-shiang said among the companies that signed letters of intent were Hewlett-Packard Co, Super Micro Computer Inc, NICCA Chemical Co Ltd and Beijing Holdings Ltd and their investments could create 12,900 jobs.
Hewlett-Packard plans to invest 112 million US dollars to upgrade its regional computer-research and -development centre in Taiwan into a global computing hub to develop the next-generation computers and peripherals.
Shih said Taiwan's June signing with China of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), which is similar to a free-trade agreement, has made Taiwan a more attractive place for investment.
'After Taiwan signed the ECFA with China, Singapore immediately said it wanted to sign an economic cooperation agreement with Taiwan,' he said. 'Taiwan is also seeking to sign free-trade agreements with its major trading partners like the United States, Japan, the European Union, ASEAN [the Association of South-East Asian Nations], Australia and New Zealand.'
