Indonesia asks Taiwan to help develop island
Oct 12, 2010, 7:59 GMT
Taipei - Indonesia has proposed that Taiwan co-develop an island known for its timber and resin exports, Premier Wu Den-yih said Tuesday, adding that more talks with Jakarta were needed to discuss the details.
Wu said Indonesia last month invited Taiwan to to help develop Morotai Island, on the north-eastern tip of Indonesia.
'This shows that Indonesia takes it seriously,' he said. 'But regarding what projects Indonesia wants us to invest in, and what projects Taiwan can invest in, the two sides need to discuss.'
According to the United Daily News, Taiwan is to send inspection teams to Morotai and Indonesian officials will visit Taiwan next month. If all goes well, Taiwan could submit an investment plan to Indonesia in early 2011.
The 1,800-square-kilometre island, a major World War II military base, is inhabited by about 50,000 people.
