New Zealand jobless rate falls to 6.4 per cent
Nov 3, 2010, 23:40 GMT
Wellington - New Zealand's unemployment rate fell to 6.4 per cent in the September quarter, down from 6.9 per cent in the previous three months, according to official figures released Thursday.
The total number of jobless was down 9,000 to 150,000, Statistics New Zealand said, noting a marked change in the labour market for men and women.
The female unemployment rate rose to 7.2 per cent, from 6.8 per cent in the previous quarter, while the male rate dropped from 6.9 per cent to 5.7 per cent.
The official unemployment rate is based on Statistics New Zealand's household labour-force survey of a representative sample of 15,000 households throughout the country, and not on the number receiving jobless benefits.
