German flights grounded, delayed by pilot strike (Roundup)
Dec 8, 2010, 12:23 GMT
Frankfurt - A strike by pilots at German charter airlines Tuifly and Germania led to cancellations and delays on Wednesday.
The stoppage over work conditions also affected flights operated by both carriers on behalf of the country's second largest airline, Air Berlin, forcing them to cancel six flights, a spokeswoman for the company said.
Air Berlin said flights between Stuttgart and Milan were affected, as well as domestic routes. Services were expected to return to normal during the course of the day.
Around 300 passengers were stranded in the morning as two flights to the Canary Islands were cancelled by Tuifly, whose pilots went on strike for three hours from 5 am (0400 GMT).
Around 150 pilots for Germania were summoned by their union Cockpit to take part in a 13-hour strike, ending at 6pm.
Germania said on its website that some flights were delayed, but none were cancelled.
Tuifly pilots are locked into a wage dispute, after they failed to reach an agreement with the airline in negotiations on November 30. Pilots with Germania are protesting over the airline's efforts to prevent them from setting up an employee council, Cockpit said.
