Singapore airport welcomes this year's 40 millionth passenger
Dec 15, 2010, 12:41 GMT
Singapore - Singapore's international airport saw its 40 millionth passenger this year on Wednesday, hitting a record high as the recovering economy and two new casino resorts boost tourism.
Changi airport had already broken its record for annual passengers, receiving 38 million passengers from January to November, more than the 37.8 million recorded for the whole of 2008, previously the busiest year to date.
The numbers for the first eleven months of the year were 13.8 per cent higher than the same period last year.
According to Switzerland-based Airports Council International, the increase puts the airport in seventh position among the world's busiest airports, based on data from August.
Currently, Changi serves 98 airlines operating some 5,200 weekly scheduled flights to and from more than 200 cities in 60 countries and territories, the Changi Airport Group said in a statement.
Tourism numbers in Singapore have surged in 2010, reaching nearly 1 million per month, following the opening of two multi-billion dollar casino resorts, Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands.
