New chairman nominated for Nordic banking group Nordea
Dec 22, 2010, 15:49 GMT
Stockholm - Finnish businessman Bjorn Wahlroos was Wednesday nominated as the new chairman of the Nordic banking group Nordea.
The nomination committee's proposal was announced the day after chairman Hans Dalborg said he would not seek re-election at the 2011 annual general meeting.
The 58-year-old Wahlroos, currently Nordea's deputy chairman, had been widely expected to get the nod, not least since he is the chairman of the Finnish-based insurer group Sampo - Nordea's largest shareholder with almost 21 per cent of the capital and voting rights.
Dalborg, 69, is a Nordea veteran. He was named chief executive in 1991 and in 2000 oversaw the creation of the Nordic banking group when Merita Bank of Finland and Nordbanken of Sweden merged.
He has been the chairman of Nordea since 2002.
Nordea is facing other changes as the Swedish government, Nordea's second largest owner, has said that it still plans to sell off its stakes in the group during its current term in office.
