Taiwan tourism on the rise, officials say
Dec 24, 2010, 7:33 GMT
Taipei - Taiwan expects to attract 6.5 million foreign visitors next year after a bumper tourism year in 2010, Janice Lai, director of the Tourism Bureau, said Friday.
The island had welcomed 5 million foreign visitors as of November 26, Transport Minister Mao Chih-kuo said, and was on track to surpass 5.5 million for the entire year.
This year's figures were up from 4.4 million foreign visitors for 2009, he said.
Taiwan's tourist numbers have enjoyed robust growth in recent years because of the global economic recovery, promotional campaigns and Taiwan opening its doors to Chinese tourists in 2008.
'Taiwan's tourism industry has reached a turning point,' Mao said at a tourism conference. 'It must transform, launch new products, such as medical tourism, shopping tourism and exhibition tourism.'
About 60 per cent of Taiwan's foreign visitors are tourists and the rest are foreign businessmen, workers and students.
