Staff at Vietnam electronics company end strike over pay, holidays

Jan 5, 2011, 5:55 GMT

Hanoi - Some 1,000 workers ended their strike Wednesday at a Taiwan-owned electronics company in northern Vietnam following a dispute over pay and holidays, a trade union official and state media said.

Staff at the Neo-Neon company in Thai Binh City stopped working Tuesday, demanding a 13th-month salary payment and longer holidays for the Lunar New Year starting February 1, a union official said.

In previous years, the company often paid workers a bonus of about 50 dollars. The company also allowed workers to take four days off for the Lunar New Year holiday. Workers said it was too short because Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on Tuesday granted civil servants eight days of leave.

Work resumed after the company agreed to the striking workers' demands, the union official said.

The state-run newspaper Lao Dong reported it had been the fourth strike in as many months at that factory.

Strikes often increase in Vietnam ahead of the Lunar New Year.
