Iberia employees sentenced to prison for runway protest
Jan 28, 2011, 14:01 GMT
Madrid - Spain's Supreme Court on Friday confirmed two-year prison sentences for 23 employees of the airline Iberia who blocked Barcelona runways in July 2006.
The protest against a new baggage check arrangement was staged at the height of the holiday season. It affected about 600 flights, leaving 100,000 passengers stranded.
The Iberia employees had seriously disturbed public order, the court said, pointing out that they could have used legal means of protest such as going on strike.
The Supreme Court rejected their appeal against an earlier verdict. Because the convicts have no criminal records, the prison sentences were expected to be suspended.
