Taiwan bars ordinary chocolate being sold as chocolate truffle
Feb 13, 2011, 6:18 GMT
Taipei - Taiwan ordered importers and supermarkets to correctly label chocolate's ingredients as most of the chocolate truffles sold in Taiwan contain no truffle, it was reported Sunday.
The Consumer Protection Commission issued the order as its survey showed that 95 per cent of the chocolate truffles sold in Taiwan contain no truffle at all, the Liberty Times reported.
Calling it an act of cheating, the commission ordered the 'fake chocolate truffles' be removed from shelves, the paper said.
A dozen varieties of imported chocolate truffle are sold in Taiwan. Most have no truffle but are still sold at high prices.
In Taiwan, the bona fide chocolate truffle is sold at the Maison de la Truffe, a French restaurant which offers dishes made with truffle. Its chocolate truffles cost 3 US dollars each.
