McDonald's earnings boosted by European sales
Apr 21, 2011, 15:16 GMT
New York - McDonald's recorded fat earnings in the first quarter, boosted in part by rising hunger for its menu in Europe, the fast food giant said Thursday.
Earnings rose 11 per cent over the year-earlier period to 1.2 billion dollars, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based firm said. Sales rose 9 per cent to 6.1 billion dollars.
European sales saw the largest increase of any region, growing 5.7 per cent, compared to 2.9 per cent growth in the home US market and 3.2 per cent in Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Within Europe, Britain, France, Russia and Germany saw sales rise.
In addition to menu classics such as hamburgers and french fries, demand also rose for the chain's McCafe coffee drinks.
The world's largest fast food chain employs 1.7 million people at 32,000 outlets.
