EasyJet reports growing losses in "tough" economic environment
May 10, 2011, 7:41 GMT
London - British budget airline EasyJet Tuesday reported a near doubling of pre-tax losses to 153 million pounds (250 million dollars) in the past six months up to the end of March.
The company said the loss, up from 79 million pounds in the same period of 2010, was due largely to higher fuel costs and a 'tough' economic environment.
It included the period of severe weather disruption, caused by snow, in December. Higher fuel costs accounted for 43 million pounds of the increase.
At the same time, passenger numbers increased by 12 per cent to just under 24 million. EasyJet said nearly two-thirds of its customers now come from outside Britain.
'The past six months has been tough with sharply rising fuel costs combined with cautious behaviour by consumers and an adverse impact from taxes on passengers,' said Carolyn McCall, easyJet's chief executive.
