Philippine budget carrier orders 37 new Airbus jets
Jun 16, 2011, 7:43 GMT
Manila - Philippine budget carrier Cebu Pacific said Thursday it was buying 37 new jets from Airbus for 3.8 billion dollars, the largest order ever made by a Philippine airline.
The order for 30 A321neo jets and seven A320s, which would be delivered between 2015 and 2021, would boost the carrier's plan to expand operations in Asia.
Lance Gokongwei, chief executive and president of Cebu Pacific, said the A321neos would allow the airline to serve cities in Australia, India and northern Japan that the A320 could not reach.
'These 220-seater aircraft will be a real game changer for Cebu Pacific,' Gokongwei said.
'The aircraft will reduce our unit cost per seat to a level that cannot be achieved flying A320s,' he added. 'This means that Cebu Pacific will be able to offer even lower fares to our guests.'
Cebu Pacific currently utilizes 25 Airbus A320 and eight ATR turbo-prop aircraft. By 2021, the carrier plans to more than double its fleet and triple its capacity.
Since its foundation in 1996, Cebu Pacific has flown 50 million passengers. It aims to carry more than 12 million passengers this year.
