Hybrid Ferrari spotted on test in Germany
Jul 27, 2011, 3:06 GMT
Stuttgart/London - Spy shots from Germany indicate that Ferrari's much-rumoured hybrid supercar is set to become a reality.
A prototype from the Italian manufacturer has been spotted by photographers underway near Stuttgart. It was carrying German red-and-white test plates.
Stuttgart is home to the Bosch component giant which is believed to be working with Ferrari on the project, Britain's well-informed Autocar magazine reported.
The two-seater car is a partly-disguised testbed or mule for the new technology. The vehicle is designed to mislead spy photographers who compete with each other to come up with pictures of new models before these have been officially unveiled.
Ferrari, based in Maranello, revealed plans for a petrol-electric model in its range of iconic high-performance cars at the 2010 Geneva Show. The new hybrid will reduce the average overall CO2 consumption of the Ferrari model range amid increasing demand from well-heeled customers for exclusive performance cars with green credentials.
The 599 Hybrid Concept on display in Switzerland featured twin electric motors and a pack of batteries, making the car 100 kilos heavier than the standard model. Ferrari says performance remains impressive, with powerful acceleration from the electric equipment.
