World Bank to boost Philippines fight against corruption, poverty
Oct 25, 2011, 6:46 GMT
Manila - World Bank president Robert Zoellick on Tuesday began a three-day visit to the Philippines to support efforts by President Benigno Aquino III to fight corruption and widespread poverty in the country.
'We know that corruption is a drag on the economy, taxes the poor and strangles opportunity,' Zoellick said. 'I am looking forward to seeing first hand and learning from some of the reforms President Aquino has put in place to improve governance.'
Zoellick was scheduled to meet with Aquino and senior economic officials as well as leaders of civil society groups and the private sector during his visit.
He planned to visit a poor community in Manila to meet with recipients of World Bank-supported monthly cash payments for school and medical care.
