Merkel: Innovation is key to European Union future
Nov 9, 2011, 3:31 GMT
Berlin - Innovation is the key to the European Union's future, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in an interview, arguing for heavy investment in education and scientific research.
'It is important to do everything to ... strengthen our ability to innovate in Europe, because that is our advantage ... with which we can impress the world,' she told dpa in the interview, which was released Wednesday.
'We don't have an amazingly fast-growing market, we don't have a huge amount of money in reserves, and Europe is not a continent that is very rich in resources. What we do have is our cultural experience, our political stability and our ability to innovate.
'If we one day get into the situation where we can no longer manufacture the newest products, we won't be especially attractive,' she said, referring to government programmes to promote advanced technology.
