Nov 18, 2011, 18:06 GMT
Paris - France's five biggest trade unions on Friday called a national day of mobilization on December 13 to protest the government's austerity plans.
In a statement, the CFDT, CGT, FSU, Solidaires and UNSA unions said austerity was 'not the solution to the crisis' and risked dragged the country into recession.
Apart from a day of protest on December 13, the unions called on workers to 'question' the government, elected officials and business owners over a two-week period, beginning December 1. They did not elaborate on what form that questioning should take.
President Nicolas Sarkozy's government has unveiled two austerity plans within three months that aim to erase the budget deficit by 2017.
The 2012 budget bill, which is currently before parliament, contains over 12 billion euros in tax increases and spending cuts. The bill passed the lower house of parliament Wednesday and is currently before the Senate.
