Singapore media giant sues Yahoo over copyright violation
Nov 23, 2011, 7:15 GMT
Singapore - Singapore's largest newspaper publisher is suing US internet giant Yahoo Inc for allegedly reproducing its articles without permission, Yahoo confirmed Wednesday.
In a statement posted on its Singapore website, Yahoo said Singapore Press Holdings Ltd (SPH) was claiming breach of copyright over 23 articles allegedly lifted from its newspapers.
Yahoo denied all allegations. 'We intend to vigorously defend ourselves against this suit,' South-East Asia managing editor Alan Soon said.
'Our editorial business model of acquired, commissioned and original content is proven,' he added.
SPH, which has a near-monopoly over the state's newspapers, filed its statement of claim with the High Court on Friday, giving Yahoo until December 13 to file its defence, the Straits Times reported.
SPH publishes 18 titles in four languages, including the flagship Straits Times.
