Unemployment in Britain continues to rise
Dec 14, 2011, 12:01 GMT
London - Unemployment in Britain rose to 2.64 million by the end of October - its highest level in 17 years - while youth unemployment hit a record 1.03 million, official statistics showed Wednesday.
The unemployment rate rose by 0.4 per cent, to reach 8.3 per cent between August and October, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.
Public-sector employment fell below 6 million for the first time since 2003, the figures showed, reflecting government efforts to curtail the public sector in line with its austerity programme.
