Shares jump in Seoul

Seoul - Shares rose sharply Wednesday on the Seoul stock exchange on positive economic data in the US and Germany, as investor concerns over the situation in North Korea after the death of leader Kim Jong Il eased.
The benchmark Kospi index surged 55.35 points, or 3.1 per cent, to close at 1,848.41. Advancing issues outnumbered losers 698 to 148.
The main index of the technology-heavy Kosdaq market soared 11.03 points to 500.64, up 2.3 per cent.
On currency markets, the US dollar was quoted at 1,147.70 Korean won, after trading at 1,162.20 Tuesday.
