Iberia pilots' strike forces cancellation of more than 100 flights
Jan 11, 2012, 10:09 GMT
Madrid - A 24-hour strike by pilots of Spain's biggest airline, Iberia, led to the cancellation of 104 flights on Wednesday, affecting about 10,000 passengers, the carrier said.
A total of 292 flights had been scheduled. Most of the affected passengers were placed on other flights.
The strike day was the fourth by Iberia pilots since December. The pilots are protesting the creation of the low-cost carrier Iberia Express, which is due to be launched in March.
Iberia Express will cover routes in Spain and Europe, freeing Iberia to concentrate on lucrative trans-Atlantic routes.
The pilots' trade union Sepla says the new airline will hire staff from outside Iberia, endangering thousands of jobs.
Iberia was continuing talks with Sepla, Iberia's Chairman Antonio Vazquez said.
