Spain's unemployed surpasses 5-million mark
Jan 27, 2012, 8:33 GMT
Madrid - Spain's number of jobless people increased by 295,300 people to 5.27 million in the fourth quarter of 2011, raising the unemployment rate to 22.85 per cent, the statistics body INE said Friday.
Spain's jobless rate is the highest in the European Union. It is expected to continue growing as the economy sinks into a recession this year.
The global crisis hit Spain particularly hard, contributing to the meltdown of its important property sector.
