Transport strike paralyses Lisbon underground, ferry traffic
Feb 2, 2012, 14:29 GMT
Lisbon - A transport sector strike protesting spending cuts on Thursday largely paralysed the Lisbon underground, as well as ferry traffic over River Tagus in the Portuguese capital, media reported.
Portuguese bus traffic was reportedly less affected. Trains operated normally on national routes, the rail company CP said.
Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho's government had estimated that the 24-hour strike would cost the country 150 million euros (195 million dollars).
But the third transport strike in three months appeared to attract less following than the previous ones.
The strike was protesting privatizations and wage cuts affecting the transport sector.
In November, the government faced a general strike over its austerity policies, launched in agreement with the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, which have granted Portugal a bailout worth 78 billion euros.
