Feb 15, 2012, 7:52 GMT
Paris - The French economy grew 1.7 per cent in 2011, fractionally below the government's forecast of 1.75 per cent, the national statistics agency INSEE said Wednesday.
Gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.2 per cent in the last quarter of the year.
Analysts had been expecting the economy to stop growing or slightly contract in the fourth quarter.
Growth is expected to slow sharply this year.
The government recently halved its growth forecast for the year, from 1 per cent to 0.5 per cent.
